Eye Candy works on TV!
Ok, let’s be real. The most “viral” videos [meaning those that get passed around a lot] are the funny ones and the ones with good, instructional “show-me-how-to-do-it” information.
And there’s another category too – it’s the one’s that aren’t funny nor are they that deep – but the ones are that are pleasant to the eyes. Or, as this is commonly called in PR: Having some “eye candy” appeal.
If you want your video to get a lot of views – it helps if you’re ATTRACTIVE. Now you don’t have to be a Tyra Banks or Beyonce’ to get views and you don’t have to be a “cover girl” or “pageant queen” – but you do have to put your best FACE forward.
Here are some tips to get your video seen and shared a lot:
1. Create curiosity. Give your video tag an interesting, descriptive and clever name. Names are important. Keywords are critical too. So make sure you label your video with care. Make it memorable. Think of it like naming a baby or book title or a movie. You put a lot of thought into to make sure it is received well. You want to captivate your audience and you get about 3 seconds to do so with a good name of the video.
2. Add Interest. Add some music. Mix it up. Just don’t be boring please! If nothing else, pick an interesting spot to shoot your video. Go outside. Have some good books in the background. A prop of some sort. If you got some cash, get a GREEN SCREEN and really make it fun. The point is: spice it up. People are watching YOU but they also wander and look at the background and their eyes roll to stuff behind you. Don’t make it distracting – just make it interesting! And make sure you have good lighting.
3. Pull it together. Image is everything. Ok, ladies, the only person who really loves the “natural” you is probably your significant other and your family – everyone else wants to see some makeup. Yes! Put it on even if you don’t normally wear it. It will help you get more views because it shows you’re making an effort for your audience to put your best FACE forward. I wear more eye makeup than normal and I also darken my eyebrows and wear blush, lipstick and foundation. Takes me 10 minutes tops. Do the total image – your nails, your hair, jewelry and the right outfit. Just don’t wear anything too distracting or too revealing. We don’t want you banned on youtube for showing TOO MUCH cleavage. You want to be taken seriously – and not passed around because you got your “girls” showing.
4. Smile. This is the most important accessory. Have fun. People want to watch people who are comfortable and look like they enjoy what they’re doing. It’s o.k. to add humor, just be authentic. Don’t read a script. Don’t try to memorize anything. Remember it’s a Youtube video – not a blockbuster movie. Just be yourself and relax. You have something to say? Just give it some thought, package it well and remember to lighten up when you deliver it.
I did this video below to show you how “natural” a video can look and it’s ok to be silly. This video got more 200 views in a few hours. I was myself (people can spot a phony) and I had fun. I do a series of branding tips – this one was done to show you how to break up the monotony and surprise your viewers. That keeps them coming back – because they’re laughing with you – or at least somewhat amused.
No one likes “ALL BUSINESS” ALL the time. So, take your Flip camera or whatever you use and have some fun once in while. Your audience will appreciate your “realness” and your online brand will begin to build “brand equity.”
